If you're anything like me, you like starting the week off strong. Pumping some iron, reminding yourself you're super woman/man, getting in that protein packed breakfast and thinking "I got this" is a pretty great feeling.
Then, drum roll please...Our good friend "Thursday" comes along and its sidekick "The Weekend" and we're looking at those machines in the gym like...Really, today? I'm a bit sore. And a healthy dinner? I deserve to let loose tonight. We have all been there. Some weeks we talk ourselves out of our long-term goals and talk ourselves into short-term satisfaction. And again, if you're like me, that happens pretty often. So, I started to work on it. And, I think you can too!
I asked myself, why do I like to workout? What does it do for me? How do my long-term desires fit into my daily routine? How do I show up for myself when I really don't feel like showing up for anything but a big bowl of pad Thai and a lot of Netflix? This is the action plan I followed to find my focus, boost my happiness and feel more empowered about my choices.
1. Figure Out Why
Answer those questions above. Realizing that fitness and a healthy lifestyle are important to me because of how it makes me feel rather than how I look was possibly the most important "ah-hah" moment along this journey.
2. Write It Down
I keep my "10 Commitments" on my mirror in my bathroom so that I can repeat them to myself every day when I'm getting ready. I also use expo markers to write notes on my mirror that keep me motivated.
3. Celebrate Your Successes
Worked out today? Celebrate it. Every step you take towards living a healthier happier lifestyle is worth celebrating. And the more you appreciate your successes, the more likely you are to continue living a healthy lifestyle. You are doing your best and that is always MORE than enough.
Listen to your body, your mind and your heart. The best is when they're all working in tandem. When we feel all of our emotions and embrace them, it's exponentially more likely for your to be successful in overcoming challenges and setting positive intentions for yourself.
5. Mix It Up
Want to try indoor cycling? Who cares if this doesn't fit this week's cardio schedule? Go for it! You could love it! Need to step back and do a bit of yoga as a break? The only person you have to please is yourself.
6. Keep a Routine
Always have your trusty routine on the back burner for when you need it. Nothing is wrong with being a little inflexible when it's time for you to center yourself.
7. Endorphins = Happiness
Do one thing a day that makes you extremely happy. Some days, that may just be your workout but lots of days, it will be MORE. The happier you are, the more likely you are to encourage that happiness long term. Take a walk after dinner, enjoy a meal on your own, workout with a friend, watch a movie, cook, do your laundry (I don't know? I'm not judging what makes you happy), just do it! You'll feel better, more refreshed and aligned.
8. Repeat the Mantra that Resonates with YOU.
Mine is: "Everything in my life is exactly the way it should be. I have everything that I need and I am everything that I will ever need. I trust that my life is perfect for me."
9. Successes Take Time
Be compassionate and know that success takes time. Not every day is perfect, not every workout will be what you expect...Show yourself that it's okay - in fact, it's incredibly normal! You will get to where you want to be!
10. Be Mindful.
Stay present; enjoy the moment and always practice trusting yourself. Like you say on your Mondays, YOU GOT THIS.
