As a native New Yorker and Manhattanite, I often get asked about the best places to eat in New York City. Because I’m a night owl in the comfort of my own home, surrounded by snacks, my bed, and Netflix (aka I’m not out and about into the wee hours of the morning), most of my recommendations are usually breakfast, lunch, and brunch places. Below are a few of my go-tos that I think both the native New Yorker and visiting tourist can enjoy! I should also note that I always consider the insta when making recommendations, so you can fully trust that all the places below are instagrammable.
Here are my favorite places that are true Instagram staples that also serve great food. I mean what more can you ask for? That’s the dream combo. And better yet, these are places that won’t necessarily break the bank.
Egg Shop is one of my favorites. To be honest, I’m someone who likes to stick with what I know and to a routine, so I usually have the same thing when I come here, which is the BENEDICT. You might expect to get the usual Eggs Benedict plate, but instead you get something better and more interesting - a bowl filled with crispy bacon, kale, gluten-free croutons, and poached eggs, of course. The interior vibes are always good too, so you can’t go wrong!
There’s one located in Nolita, and Egg Shop just recently opened in Williamsburg! Thankfully, the one in Williamsburg is a bigger space too.
A couple summers ago, I was quietly munching on my avocado toast at Butcher’s Daughter and in walked Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin. That should tell you enough, right? This is a celebrity, model-approved NYC staple. Butcher’s Daughter has great juices and vegetarian food. I love their avocado toast because I feel like they don’t shy away from really putting as much avocado on the toast as possible. Unlike a lot of other cafes’ avocado toasts, Butcher’s Daughter’s is not only yummy but also filling. The interior is also a BEAUT, guaranteed to be bright with plants and more inside.
My personal favorite is the one in the West Village (mainly for its interior), but the one in NoLita is a true staple. In the summer, it’s even better if you get to snag a table outside!
Jack’s Wife Freda
Jack’s Wife Freda is where great food makes great Instagrams. The food at Jack’s Wife draws a crowd throughout all hours of the day, but it’s worth the wait, especially as a visiting tourist. Their American-Mediterranean dishes are unique, yet familiar all at the same time - from their rosewater waffle to their chicken kebab couscous (my personal favorite). Go for breakfast or for lunch—you can’t go wrong! And the ultimate win is that they have unlimited refills of drip coffee.
There’s one in Soho on Lafayette St. and one in Greenwich Village on Carmine Street. I love them both, so whichever neighborhood you find yourself in, go check it out!
